Updating a fireplace

Q How do I update the look of the red brick fireplace in my living room? It’s dirty, rutty, and it looks horrible, even after I’ve cleaned it!We are updating the rest of the room, and our budget won’t allow for much more spending. A Give it a face lift with paint, the first line of defense when updating a fireplace that has seen better days.I’ve been on a mission lately to get rid of all the remaining brass “builder touches” in our home, and this was one of the last remaining hold outs. The first thing I did was remove the metal sections that had the brass on them.

I had already purchased my spray paint and was ready to go, only after I removed these sections … I realized that the brass was just a covering over the metal grill thingy!
